Saturday, October 3, 2015

Sonja Eisenberg's "Sea Change" and Strong-Cuevas' "Out of My Mind" sold above estimate at the September 30, 2015 auction at Christie's. Eisenberg's "Sea Change," a water color measuring 10 x 12.75 inches and completed in 1992, realized a price of $12,500. "Out of My Mind," a 28 x 17 x 10 inch bronze executed by Strong-Cuevas in 1995 sold for $47,500.

German-born Eisenberg has lived in New York since fleeing Nazi Germany with her family at the age of eleven. Her work is represented in the Smithsonian Institution (Washington, DC), the Jewish Museum of Art (New York, NY), the official collection of the United Nations (New York, NY) and dozens of public and private collections. Her paintings have been exhibited widely across the United States and in France, Israel, Japan, Amsterdam, Austria, England, Switzerland and her native Germany. Her retrospective will be held October 7 to November 1, 2015 at Leonard Tourné Gallery.

Born in Paris, Strong-Cuevas lives and works in New York, where she studied under John Hovannes at the Art Students League of New York and worked on projects with Toto Meylan. Her work has been exhibited in dozens of solo and group exhibitions, including the IIème Biennale de Sculpture in Monte Carlo, Monaco, and is represented in the collections of the Bruce Museum (Greenwich, Connecticut), Heckscher Museum (Huntington, New York), Guild Hall Museum (East Hampton, New York), Grounds for Sculpture (Hamilton, New Jersey) and the Smithsonian-affiliated Long Island Museum (Stony Brooke, New York).

The most recent auction results follow the sale of Strong-Cuevas' "Windows," a bronze completed in 1998, at Christie's in July 2015 and her 1981 bronze, "One Eye Wall," at Sotheby's in June 2014. Leonard Tourné Gallery will open a solo exhibition for Strong-Cuevas on November 15, 2015, coinciding with the launch of her book, Premonitions in Retrospect (Abrams 2015).
