Max Glaser ranks right at the top of Leonard Tourné Gallery's most popular and best selling artists. We've represented him since early 2011, at the start of his "Containment" period.
It's no wonder his work catches the eyes of so many art lovers and collectors.
Much like conceptual artist Damien Hirst, Glaser's work embraces preservation.
But Glaser takes this one step further, by compressing and altering his subject matter before containing it between panels of bullet-proof plexiglass.
Left: Damien Hirst, "The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living," 1991, tiger shark, formaldehyde, vitrine
Right: Max Glaser, "My Mother," 2010, fish, resin, glass, cheesecloth. SOLD
While some of his earlier containment pieces featured once-live animals (which died of natural causes), his newer pieces have dealt with food products and other organic matter.
Max Glaser, "Caked Together Fossils," 2011, Hostess cupcakes, Twinkies, Maraschino cherries, zebra cakes, honey. Price: $2,500
Max Glaser, "Grape," 2010, grapefruit, honey, lumber, bullet-proof plexiglass, barcode. SOLD
Max Glaser's Artist Statement
I am interested in the physical creation of information. Pushing the underlying properties of conscious formation, I investigate four-dimensional reality’s compression into data’s flat imago. Consciousness necessitates the containment, preservation and catalog of experience. Consequently, the mind presses reality into 2d images of symbol and memory. Sculptural reality becomes pictorial. Attempting to fasten experience, these mechanisms create zombie abstractions of existence, themselves devoid of real life. Yet, despite all coercion to fix existential dynamism, to still and distill life, change remains irrepressible. Photos fade, symbols change, memories mutate, and the tightly bound self disperses vaporously into everything.
His glass sculptures are equally as captivating as his containment pieces.
